Rathausplatz is the square in front of Vienna City Hall (Rathaus) in Vienna’s first district, Innere Stadt. It is a lively and very popular place, famous mainly thanks to the Christmas Markets in winter and Rathaus Film Festival in summer. There are many landmarks and important buildings at or near Rathausplatz – among them Burgtheater, the building of Austrian Parliament, Universität Wien, and a few minutes walk away the Imperial Palace Hofburg, Volkstheater, and many museums. Important streets near Rathausplatz include Doktor-Karl-Lueger-Ring (part of Ringstrasse with frequent tram service), Landesgerichtsstrasse (behind Vienna City Hall), and Universitätsstrasse (behind Vienna University building).
The area around Rathausplatz is one of the most typical and most popular hotel locations in Vienna. The concentration of hotels is among the highest in the city. Most hotels near Rathausplatz are in the upper quality levels – most typically 4 star hotels, but you will also find several luxury 5 star hotels, as well as a few cheaper 3 star hotels (mostly in the streets behind the City Hall, outside the first district).
Rathausplatz and its surroundings have excellent public transport connections. You will find several metro (U-Bahn) stations within 5-10 minutes walk from Rathausplatz – plus there are tram stops every few steps on the Ringstrasse. The U-Bahn station closest to Rathausplatz is Rathaus Station on line U2 – the station’s entrance is situated behind the City Hall building on Landesgerichtsstrasse. Other nearby stations (all within 5 minutes walk from Rathausplatz and with plenty of accommodation options) are Volkstheater (in the south next to Naturhistorisches Museum), Schottentor (in the north behind Vienna University building), and Herrengasse (in the east next to the Imperial Palace).
Book your hotel early, especially when you are not flexible with the dates of stay in Vienna.
