Due to the construction of the new Main Train Station in Vienna and the closure of Südbahnhof for long-distance trains, the train station in Meidling has become an important hub for many people travelling to or through Vienna using a train.
Those who need to get from Wien Meidling Station to Vienna Airport may be confused, as Meidling Bahnhof was less known until recently and it is situated at the opposite (south-west) end of Vienna from the Schwechat Airport. However, thanks to Viennese outstanding system of trains and metro, the transfer is quite fast and convenient.
A good transport hub on the way to Vienna International Airport is the U-Bahn and S-Bahn station Landstrasse/Wien-Mitte east of the city centre. To get from Wien Meidling Station to Wien-Mitte you can take either the metro (U6 to Westbahnhof and then U3 to Landstrasse/Wien-Mitte), or you can take the S-Bahn directly.
The S-Bahn section between Wien-Meidling and Wien-Mitte is a part of the Stammstrecke (the main urban train corridor in Vienna) and the intervals between trains are short. Just make sure you go in the right direction (Südtiroler Platz, Rennweg, Wien-Mitte).
From Landstrasse/Wien-Mitte to Vienna Airport you can take either the CAT (City Airport Train), which is a shuttle train operated by the airport, or you can take the usual S-Bahn train (the direct connection between Wien-Mitte and the airport is line S7). Note that while you can use the public transport pass on the S-Bahn trains, you must buy a separate ticket if you are taking the CAT train.
