As one of the many attractions Vienna is offering this summer, Cy Twombly’s exhibition takes place from 4 June to 11 October 2009 in the Museum of Modern Art (Museum Moderner Kunst, or MUMOK in short). It is the first time Twombly’s work is being exhibited in Austria. Cy Twombly, born in 1928 in the US, is an artist, photographer, painter, and scupltor. He has gone through various styles in his life and is mostly famous due to his large scale calligraphic-style graffiti paintings, signs similar to writing, and white sculptures. You can read more in the Cy Twombly’s profile.
The Viennese exhibition is titled Sensations of the Moment. Museum of Modern Art presents Twombly’s work throughout all his creative periods and there are also some works he created specifically for the Viennese exbition. The special thing about this exhibition is that the various paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photographs are not arranged based on style or period, but rather according to their mutual influences and “how they enrich one another.” “Die Werke werden so präsentiert, dass die gegenseitige Reflexion, die Beeinflussung und Bereicherung der einzelnen Medien deutlich wird…” (from the official website of MUMOK)
Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (MUMOK) or Museum of Modern Art is located in the Museumsquartier at Museumsplatz. It is best accessible by U-Bahn, station Museumsquartier (U2) or Volkstheater (U2 and U3). The museum is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm and to 9 pm on Thursdays. German and English language catalogs are available at the exhibition.
